Gateway School of New York

As Construction Manager for this $12 million project, B.R. Fries provided preconstruction and general contracting services for the complete renovation and build-out of 25,000 square feet of former industrial space at 211 West 61st Street in Manhattan.

The Gateway School of New York is a LEED Silver Certified school (the first LEED CI certified education project in NYC). The project included a build-out of the 5th and 6th floors. The scope including entire classroom with interactive white boards, wet and dry labs, office /administrative space, a gym, library, workshops and grandstand flexible auditorium space. We also renovated the basement to include spaces for maintenance, mechanical and telecom/data.

As a conversion from industrial space, project challenges included new structural requirements to create new openings, skylights, a connecting stair between the 5th and 6th floors and installation of a radiant heating flooring system.

The Gateway School is a world-renown institution for learning disabled children. The new facility represents The Gateway School’s unique pedagogy in providing an environment specifically designed for LD children. Small, flexible classrooms, breakout rooms, and hallways with alcoves and occupied edges provide multiple avenues for interaction between students and teachers.
