Kohl’s Multi-Store Construction & Renovation Projects

B.R. Fries partnered with Kohl’s Corporation, one of America’s leading department store chains operating over 1,100 stores in 49 states, to complete multiple large-scale retail construction and renovation projects in the New York metropolitan area.
Brooklyn – Caesar’s Bay Bazaar Redevelopment
The Brooklyn Kohl’s store was a full conversion of a former K-Mart at the Caesar’s Bay Bazaar on Bay Parkway. The project’s complexity was heightened by its waterfront location — much of the structure, including part of the elevator pit, was built directly over water.
B.R. Fries delivered a complete rehabilitation with all-new mechanical and electrical systems, floors, walls, ceilings, and vertical transportation. A portion of the second floor, housing new store offices, was constructed directly above an operating Toys R Us, which remained open throughout construction.
Staten Island – Structural Renovation and Expansion
On Forest Avenue in Staten Island, B.R. Fries transformed a deteriorated 75,000 sq. ft. former Major’s Department Store into a new Kohl’s retail location. The work included full interior and exterior renovation, reinforcement of the existing structure, and shoring and underpinning.
Additionally, a new 55,000 sq. ft. steel-and-concrete addition was constructed, requiring innovative engineering solutions to address the challenges of a high-water-table site.
Jersey City – Newport Centre Mall Redevelopment
For the Jersey City Kohl’s, B.R. Fries performed a 180,000 sq. ft. gut renovation of a former Macy’s connected to the Newport Centre Mall. The scope included installation of new escalators, elevators, and mechanical equipment, along with complete interior fit-out: electrical systems, lighting, stone and carpet flooring, and custom millwork.
Through strategic planning and precise execution, B.R. Fries successfully delivered all three projects on schedule—demonstrating expertise in retail construction, tenant fit-outs, and complex structural renovations in active, high-traffic environments.
