B.R. Fries completed a full interior renovation of the fifth floor at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), located at 535 East 70th Street, transforming the space into a state-of-the-art department dedicated to pediatric orthopedic and rheumatology care.
Designed in collaboration with SubenDougherty and informed by input from therapists, parents, and children, this vibrant, child-friendly environment supports a positive and engaging rehabilitation experience for young patients and their families.
The scope of B.R. Fries’s work included:

Construction of 20 exam rooms, 25 in-patient rooms, and 3 x-ray rooms

Serpentine-shaped corridors designed to enhance flow and visual interest

A custom epoxy terrazzo floor that mimics a flowing river, complete with fish motifs
